Alexander Ivanovich Retuinskih was born on February 28, 1953 in Dzerzhinsk, in the Nizhniy Novgorod region to a family of workers. 
From 1971 to 1973, he served in the ranks of the Soviet army. 
In 1982, Alexander Retuinskih completed his schooling at The Kuban State Institute of Physical Training and Sports with a specialty of trainer-teacher. 
Alexander Retuinskih is a Master of Sport of the USSR in Sambo and Judo. He was a prize-winner and the champion of all-Union and All-Russian competitions. 
He is a distinguished trainer of Russia.
He is an academician at the Academy of Combat sports (ASE) at the Russian State University of Physical Training and Sports in Moscow. 
From 1982 to 1989, he was the trainer-teacher for the Sambo and Judo specializations at the Krasnodar Agricultural Institute (KSI) and  the assistant to the dean of agrochemical faculty on a physical education. 
Since 1990, he as been the founder of a project of revival of Russian Martial Art as a part of fighting national culture of the Russian people. 
In 1993, for work done on the restoration of a complete system of Sambo, Alexander Retuinskih was selected by the Chairman of the Committee of Samboof Russia and the Vice-President of the Commission of Sambo-wrestling at FIAS (the International Federation of Amateur Sambo). 
Alexander Retuinskih is the creator of a modern, sports-fighting, medical-improving, spiritually-moral system of preparation known as ROSS (the Russian Native System of Self-Defense). 
The ROSS Training System is the founder's creative endeavor of generalizing experience and knowledge that he received as the result of long-term commitment to Sambo, Judo, and studying various kinds of self-defense and hand-to-hand combat. 
The ROSS Training System is defined as "know-how" and was registered at the state enterprise "Information patent" by the Committee of the Russian Federation on patents on April 4, 1995.
The ROSS Training System is a new brand of training and perfection of skills from a position of an individual's natural movements for achieving a high-level, sports-fighting result. The Russian Native System of Self-Defense (ROSS) was designed for people of any age and any state of health. The acquisition of skills and abilities is done on the basis of studying Russian national games, dances, kinds of combat, and hand-to-hand fighting, as well as the ability to carry out a fight with the least expenditure of strength, time, and energy. 
ROSS is constructed on effective actions that take into account the biomechanical features of a person, keeping in mind how each person differs. Elements of movements and sequences of performance exercises are done by means of genetic skills in each person to use the internal congenital reflexes named «the Block of natural reactions of an organism» for a given situation. 
Since 1991, Alexander Retuinskih has conducted about 200 All-Russian, all-Union and International training seminars on Russian Martial Art ROSS.
Alexander Retuinskih has prepared and certified more than 300 first category instructors, working more than in 100 cities of Russia. 
In February, 1992 the Ministry of Justice of Russia registered the Federation of Russian Martial Art (FRMA) as having the All-Russian status. 
Since 1992, Alexander Retuinskih has been the President of the All-Russia Federation of Russian Martial Art. 
The Federation has the representatives in more than 45 regions of Russia and the CIS (Belarus, Ukraine, Kazakhstan) and abroad (the Baltic States, the USA, England, Scotland, Holland, Sweden, Finland, Canada, Germany, Australia). More than 100,000 people have trained in the ROSS Training System. 
In May 1994, the Federation was recognized by and was registered by the Olympic Committee of Russia as a unique sports public association in Russia, having powers on development of this kind of sports at a federal level and to representation of its interests abroad. 
In 2000, Alexander Retuinskih was an authorized representative to Putin V.V. , the candidate to the post of President of the Russian Federation. 
Alexander Retuinskih became the head of department on combat training of the General Staff of the Union of the Cossack Armies of Russia and abroad . 
Alexander Retuinskih became a Major General of the Cossack armies.
Alexander Retuinskih has written eight candidate papers and one thesis for a doctor's degree on the Russian Native System of Self-Defense . 
Alexander Retuinskih is the author of the book «Russian Style of Hand-to-Hand Combat» of 1991, published in Russia and in the USA;  the methodical grant «Biomechanics of Movements in Hand-to-Hand Combat – Russian style » (1999, Yaroslavl), and also programs of students training on RMA-ROSS at P.F.Lesgafta, St.-Petersburg. 
Alexander Retuinskih is the editor-in-chief and the author of the popular, scientific, sports-methodical magazine «Russian Martial Art ÐÎÑÑ». 
Alexander Retuinskih helped create 23 art and chronicle video films including «Remember, Brothers, the Glory of Russia…» and «Lessons of Great Masters», 13 of which have the status of a national film with the registered State Cinemas, . 
In 1999, Alexander Retuinskih became a member of World Head of Family Sokeship Council, the  International Organization of Grand Masters of martial arts, with assignment of a rank of the Grand Master Russian Martial Art - ROSS. (Orlando, FL). 
In 2000, the World Head of Family Sokeship Council recognized and has certificated the ROSS Training System as a new sports-fighting direction for the 21st century and has included it in the encyclopedia of martial arts of the world. Its founder— Alexander Retuinskih— has been recognizes as person of year. 
Direct participation of ROSS instructors in 2001 for the preparation of a youth ice-hockey team of Native American in the USA (a semiprofessional ice-hockey team of Northern Michigan) has taken place. Upon conclusion, the general manager-trainer and the captain thanked the  special trainings on ROSS to the players of the team for their endurance, speed, mental stability, and mobility had been raised during the season. For the entire season, there were no serious injuries. The team rose in one year from eighth place to first in their subgroup. 
The American Center of Neurosurgery uses exercises of the ROSS Training System for the treatment of patients with mental status impairments and brain damage, and also for the restoration of movements of joints. From the Neurosurgery Center, a positive response has been received. 
The American Association of Psychiatrists, studying the influence of the consistent use of ROSS exercises on patients with craniocereberal traumas and paralyses, has come to the conclusion about the necessity for the introduction of a similar practice for the rehabilitation of patients through exercises of the ROSS Training System, as it has produced very good medical-restoring results. 
By keeping historical and cultural experience of our ancestors and acquiring new knowledge and skills, youth receive an outlook that is based on the spiritual beginnings of the Russian Fatherland. 
The study of Russian Martial Art as a part of the general culture of the Russian people leads to complete spiritual and physical development of the rising generation.
